Essential iPad apps

I have been asked by friends who have recently bought an iPad for the first time what apps I advise to have on the device; this prompted me to review which apps among the 100+ I have I really use on a regular basis.

Here’s the result:

  • Google Maps
  • Google Translate
  • die Bahn (best european train timetable app)
  • Prontotreno (italian railways booking app)
  • urban metro apps of the main cities I travel to regularly
  • FarmaCityHD (finds a pharmacy around where you are)
  • Yelp (restaurant, hotels, etc.)
  • Weather HD (nice to have, but not needed)
  • iCoyote (italian speed traps)
  • CIA World Factbook (key geo data on world’ countries)
  • Airlines’ timetables (most are rather primitive, but usually allow online check-in)

  • Dropbox
  • Goodreader (simulates a file system for iOs devices)
  • Office HD (compatible with MS fileformats)
  • iWork (pale imitation of Mac office suite)
  • Adobe Connect (many teleconferencing apps out there, but Connect still one of best)
  • Prezi viewer
  • Keynote remote (to remotely run your Mac-based presentation, frankly more useful on an iPhone than on an iPad)
  • Things
  • large keys calculator
  • Soocial (best cross-platform, cross-device address book synch)

  • Hootsuite (SoNe universal client)
  • WordPress (very basic WP client)
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • G+
  • Foursquare (NOTE: do not expect too much from any SoNe clients, best used to keep abreast of updates…)

  • IMDB (THE cinema resource)
  • YouTube
  • Kindle app (sorry, Apple, can’t beat Amazon’ book catalog
  • Movies
  • Animoto (to create animated slideshows from pictures)
  • iBreviary (catholic church breviary)
  • Music (still in search of the perfect music player…)

  • Very few newspapers apps are any good, but are improving. FT, NYT and Guardian are right now IMHO best of breed
  • Netvibes (for reading RSS feeds, although I like the desktop version better)
  • Zite
  • Pulse
  • Flipboard (NOTE: these three perform the same function, personalized news in a newspaper metaphor; pick the one you like the best. For me, Zite is one notch above the others)

  • GoSkyWatchP (live planetarium. Caution: this thing is addictive!)
  • Wikipedia
  • TED talks
  • Periodic Table of the Elements
  • Advertisements
