Sun sets

In the end, it had to go, and after IBM walked out, Oracle was a likely suitor. Did IBM drop the ball? Yes, according to this analysis. Did Oracle win? Still unclear, there is at least two question I’d like answered:

  1. what will antitrust lawyers say of the Oracle / mySQL combo ?
  2. what is going to happen to the hardware business of Sun ?

There can be only one!

UPDATE: a good roundup on C|Net (with more here); in particular this:

With their applications portfolio, [Oracle with Sun] it’s actually a more vertical integration than even IBM offers directly, for the most part. (IBM does have some industry-specific solutions but not at the same scale as Oracle Financials and Manufacturing.)

makes me think: is IBM buying SAP next ?
